Arrive the weekend before Paulo Freire begins to explore the UNESCO World Heritage city of Trinidad, the natural beauty of El Nicho and take part in the May Day Parade.
Trinidad and Valle de Los Ingenios: Founded in 1514, the city of Trinidad is third village founded by Spanish explore Diego Velazquez. Through the colonial era, El Valle de Los Ingenios (Sugar Mill Valley) and Trinidad represented the epicenter of sugar cane production and one of the richest cities in the Caribbean. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 1988 and today, it is one of the best preserved colonial cities in the country. Visit the UNESCO site for more information.
El Nicho: Nestled in the foothills of the Escambray mountain range near the Cienfuegos-Sancti Spiritus border you will find El Nicho. Part of Cuba’s national system of protected areas (ANAP),this picturesque series of waterfalls and swimming holes is one of Cuba’s most significant natural attractions.
May Day Parade: International Workers’ Day is celebrated through out the world, but enjoyed in Cuba more than in any other country. With the bay as the backdrop, the parade in Cienfuegos is especially festive. La Universidad the Cienfuegos invites you to watch or be a part of the parade. The parade is capped off with live performances and music.
