Attending the PearLanguage Symposium last October 2022 at Cienfuegos University was one of the greatest experiences I have had for the last few years. I will always cherish with admiration all the learning and sharing among participants who not only presented their work and experiences, but also were willing to find different paths for collaboration, professional development, and opportunities for international relationships. The creation of La Cátedra “Antonio Morales” as a way to continue researching and expanding knowledge on the area of language teaching methodology and education has represented a step forward for more collaboration among several institutions in Cuba and abroad. The fact that we had the chance to meet great professionals and students from the CUBA TIES project was a tremendous asset for further work on cooperation in different fields, for better education and communication with the goal of building a more inclusive and better world.

PEARLANGUAGE TM has emerged as one of the most important events in Cuba related to language, culture, and communication. In this edition, the organizers aim to socialize good practices associated with language teaching and learning. Topics related to current trends in language teaching and digital transformation will serve as a point of departure for discussion.

The symposium also seeks to strengthen collaborative alliances between universities, researchers, language centers, and partner institutions. We will address lessons learned from the implementation of local development projects linked to language teaching and the role of student scientific work in language teaching.

This year, PearLanguage falls under the larger umbrella of the 2nd International Scientific Convention of the University of Cienfuegos,

WORKSHOP THEMES

The eighth edition of Cuba TIES brings together researchers, teachers, specialists, and students from scientific institutions, different organizations, and related companies of the international community. This year’s themes are:

Internationalization of higher education for the sustainable development of society: Local and regional strategies.
Integrated solutions and cooperation strategies among international relations offices.
Sustainable development, academia, culture and scientific work of higher education students.
Challenges for the sustainability of higher education internationalization processes.
International experiences in university education.
Women and their contributions to the internationalization of higher education.

PRE-CONFERENCE COURSES

This year, each workshop will offer a pre-conference course either online or in-person. Delegates are free to choose any pre-conference course from any of the workshops of the Scientific Convention.

Online pre-conference courses will be held on the Eventos UCf platform and be held the week of October 16, 2023. The online pre-conference course will cost $20 USD.

In-person pre-conference courses will be held on the campus of La Universidad de Cienfuegos on October 25, 2023. Pre-conference courses will cost $30 USD. Online courses are available to in-person delegates at no cost.

Pre-conference courses will be available beginning September 10. Delegates can register independently on the platform with their personal e-mail address.

PUBLICATION OF ARTICLES

Delegates are invited to submit proposals for papers for publication. The Scientific Committee of each workshop will select the best proposals and presentation experiences for adaptation in one of the University’s various scientific journals, including Universidad y Sociedad, the scientific journal of la Universidad de Cienfuegos. (ISSN Number: 2218-3620)

The journal, “Universidad y Sociedad” (RUS), started in 2008 in its electronic form with the aim of promoting the exchange in areas of social, humanistic, economic, technical and others sciences with an interdisciplinary character and it is integrated nationally and internationally.

The Journal dedicates at least eighty percent (80%) of each edition to the publication of original articles; and the rest to issues related to the dissemination of science and innovation. Journal articles are indexed and can be found on Scopus.

TRAVEL TO CUBA

As a delegate, you will fly into Cuba then travel three hours to the City of Cienfuegos, declared a UNESCO World Heritage City in 2005. Also, known as the Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos sits on the Caribbean coast and will be your backdrop for the week when you participate in Cuba TIES. PRESENT AT A CUBAN UNIVERSITY

Cuba invests 17% of its GDP in education. Needless to say, it considers education a precious resource and protects it as such. Just stepping foot on the campus of a Cuban University as an international visitor is an exclusive privilege. As an international delegate of the Cienfeugos Scientific Conference, you get the exclusive opportunity to visit the campus and interact with Cuban faculty, staff, administrators, and students.

BE PUBLISHED IN AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL

Delegates are invited to submit proposals for papers for publication. A select number of scholars will be invited to publish a paper of their work in one of the various journals of La Universidad de Cienfuegos including, Universidad y Sociedad, their scientific journal. (ISSN Number: 2218-3620). PLAY IN THE CUBA TIES SOFTBALL CLASSIC

Pack your cleats, a cap, and glove so you can play in the annual Cuba TIES Classic. This friendly softball game brings convention delegates to play with member of the Cienfuegos community. It is your opportunity to participate in our shared national past time on Cuban soil. Men and women of all ages are welcome to play. The Classic is organized by UCf Faculty of Physical Culture, The National Institute of Sports and Recreation (INDER), and Civitas GES. The Classic is played with members of the league Proyecto Softbol Calidad de Vida (Project Softball Quality-of-Life).

STAY WITH A HOST FAMILY

Experience your week while living with a host family in their private residence. Your hosts will prepare breakfast for you each morning. Living in a home as a guest of the family will anchor you within the community.

IMMERSE IN CUBAN CULTURE

The lessons you learn will extend far beyond the conference room. Our cultural exchanges will plug you into the community. You’ll learn from NGO’s trying to make a difference in daily life. Our full time schedule of activities are designed to make you feel like you’ve lived 6 months in 6 days.

CUBA TIES STUDENT FORUM

The Cuba TIES Student Forum is an immersive study abroad and conference experience that runs concurrently with Cuba TIES that is open to undergraduate and graduate students. PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

Get your proposal in before the deadline! The proposal deadline is August 31, 2023.

All proposals can be submitted and presented in Spanish or in English. Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words plus 5 keywords. Your thematic area can be related to any of the workshops of the 2nd Cienfuegos International Scientific Convention. The first page of your proposal should include the following data:

The abstract should include a justification for the work, the general objective, theoretical approach, methodology, and research results (if applicable). The Abstract Deadline is August 31. Accepted Abstracts will be notified by September 12. Papers and presentation deadline is September 30. You can submit your abstract in our portal here.

PLENARY GUIDELINES

Plenary lecture proposals should be submitted as soon as possible. They will be evaluated by the scientific committee on a rolling basis. Proposals must be sent in digital format to CubaPrograms@CivitasGES.com. The first page of the abstract should include: Title of the paper, Authors’ data: Names and surnames, affiliation(s), (when different, indicate with consecutive numerical superscripts), address, country of origin, and e-mail.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Commission presentations should be at least 10 minutes long with a maximum of 15 minutes. There will be live summary interpretation during your presentation. Presentation slides should be submitted in either PowerPoint or PDF format. We request that you use the provided PowerPoint template or image overlay for your presentation. Slides can be written in English, Spanish, or both. Any accompanying handouts should be submitted in a PDF format and should be in both English and Spanish. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes, but 5-10 minutes of that time will be taken up by the interpreter.

POSTER GUIDELINES

Posters should have dimensions of no more than 1.20 meters (4 feet) vertical x 0.82 meters (3 feet) horizonal. Posters must contain: Title of the research, authors’ data (names and surnames, institutional affiliation, e-mail, country), an abstract, justification, general objective, theoretical approach, methodology and results of the research. Posters can be in English, Spanish, or both.

AUDIOVISUALS GUIDELINES

Files should be in an mp4 format, between 5-10 minutes in length. They must contain: Title of the research, Author’s data (names and surnames, institutional affiliation, e-mail, country)

PROGRAM COST

The travel program for all US travelers is handled by Civitas Global Educational Services, Co-Founder of Cuba TIES. Civitas GES has been building Cuba-US partnerships and facilitating programs for US institutions since 2014. A portion of the proceeds from the travel program will be used to provide logistical support for Cubans delegates from other provinces to attend in-person. All delegates will have the support of our resident coordinators and La Universidad de Cienfuegos during the experience.
