The XII International Meeting of “The Presence of Paulo Freire: A Space to Reflect and Grow” is an original workshop dedicated to the legacy and philosophy of the late great Brazilian educator Paulo Freire.

Every other year, the University of Cienfuegos Faculty of Education in cooperation with the Cuban Association of Pedagogists (APC) convene this meeting to explore the teachings of Freire and discuss issues of Popular Education. The event is a cultural phenomenon in Cuba and educators from all over the Americas attend. This event will be held in conjunction with the VI Workshop Festival ProCreArte 2022, the V Student Forum, IV International Workshop on Inclusive Education and the III International Workshop on Patrimony, Identity and Culture of Peace.

This year’s main theme is Experiences and challenges in educational practices in times of COVID-19.

In addition, Civitas GES has arranged opportunities to meet and collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators from the University of Cienfuegos before the conference begins on May 1. After the conference, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback, provide insight with administrators and faculty as you further develop your professional or academic goals consistent with the full-time schedule as required by OFAC.

OBJECTIVE

The Presence of Paulo Freire’s central theme focuses on best practices that promote the application of Popular Education among its advocates in various contexts.

Established academics, early career-career scholars, and educators of all levels (K – Postgraduate) are encouraged to participate. The scientific committee is accepting proposals until April 10, 2022.

This year, the main objectives are to:

  • Honor Popular Educator Paulo Freire, Teacher Emeritus of the Americas, as part of Latin American and Caribbean Day, in defense of his legacy and in remembrance of the centennial of his birth
  • Further research into the theoretical and practical contributions of Popular Education in the times of COVID-19
  • Critically reflect on the experiences of Covid-19 being presented to extract theoretical and methodological lessons founded on Popular Education methodology
  • Stimulate artistic creation from the community around the work and thought of Paulo Freire and artistic creation coming from the community’s own experiences around the thematic axis
  • Promote critical analysis of youth contributions in times of COVID-19, to be able to project transforming actions from their perspective
  • Reflect on how inclusive education experiences occurred during the pandemic and strengthen them from their social dynamics
  • Appreciate how the processes of rescue, conservation, development of heritage, identity, and culture of peace occurred during the expansion of COVID-19 and extract lessons and challenges from them
