Participants record an after school program that promotes health through dance and physical activity
Dates: April 12 – 20, 2020
Venue: EICTV and San Antonio de Los Baños, Artemisa, Cuba
Registration Deadline: March 10, 2020
Civitas GES and the International School for Film and Television (EICTV), considered one of the most important audiovisual institutions in the world, have teamed up to bring you a unique workshop introducing you to short documentary production in Cuba using the most accessible of equipment – smartphones. Multiple award-winning filmmaker, Annette Danto is your workshop leader with faculty from EICTV. Filmmaker and musician, Roberto Poveda, is your co-leader.
CUBA: SMARTPHONE DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP will offer a meaningful combination of lectures, field trips, production work and community engagement. Participants will learn about Cuban cultures, history, cinema and music with visits to cultural and historic sights.
EICTV will provide the setting for an intensive smartphone documentary workshop within a Cuban context. Through a series of lectures, field visits and screenings participants will receive a comprehensive introduction to Cuban arts with an emphasis on the short documentary.
Participants will carry out production exercises at the EICTV complex and surrounding town of San Antonio De Los Baños.
The workshop will emphasize communication, creativity, connection and collaboration. This will include hands-on tech sessions, research and development of a short documentary topic, and the production and post production of that documentary.
Smartphones capture events in motion, often showing life spontaneously unfolding. Participants with little or no background in smartphone production will learn some of the basic technical skills required to record images and sound, as well as how to structure a short documentary.
In the development of a short documentary topic, the role of culture, history and social structure will be considered. The importance of cultural sensitivity when considering how to depict an environment different from ones own will be emphasized.
This workshop is open to established academics, early-career scholars, educators of all levels, professionals with an interest in film-making, documentary film-making or the visual or performing arts.
The Cuba: Smartphone Documentary Workshop will center on best practices for film and documentary film-making within a Cuban context.
This program is open to both English and Spanish speakers. We will have interpreters available for those with a limited knowledge of Spanish.
