Workshops on Afro-Cuban Cultures and Religions

Activities at the University of Cienfuegos include presentations by academic specialists in Afro-Cuban history, culture and religion, round-table discussions, question and answer period, informal conversation and exchanges with faculty and graduate students from the socio-cultura program at University of Cienfuegos. Among the topics to be discussed: slavery and its aftermath in Las Villas province, participation of Afro-Cubans in the Cuban independence movement, the creation and development of religious societies (cabildos de nación, sociedades religiosas), important historical figures in the development of the Lucumi religion in Las Villas province, 19th -20th century Afro-Cuban poets and artists, Afro-Cuban music and dance, representations of Afro-Cuban religions in contemporary popular culture.

Activities at the religious societies in Palmira include informal presentations by religious specialists who will talk about topics related to the Lucumí religion, such as the importance and use of herbs, traditional cooking for adimus, music, dancing and drumming, artisan work and community projects. In addition, there will be hands-on demonstrations and an opportunity for informal conversation and cultural exchange with people in Palmira.

Many of the activities will be in Spanish, but English translators will be on hand.
