“A Life Not Lived For Others Is Not a Life”: Volunteering During COVID-19 in Cienfuegos

One day I heard the phrase, “A life not lived for others is not a life”, and although throughout my life I have tried to live up to this, a historic moment came, which has since marked a before and after in our lives. For an entire year the world and our country has been marked by the impact of the Pandemic, which has made us completely change our realities. In Cuba, it has been a challenge to be able to deal with this context, but the response has been clear. In this case, the University has given us opportunity to serve by: being available to the people who are today most vulnerable; participating in the distribution of food and medicines; carrying out research in work directly linked to agricultural production and; working as volunteers in hospitals and isolation centers of contacts of positive cases. Trying to help from our position in all needs allows us to grow in the values on which we have been formed.

During the days we serve at the isolation center at our University of Cienfuegos, dedicated to patients who have been in contact with positive cases, we were able to corroborate the importance of so many things that we do not value every day enough, such as the freedom to be able to walk without worries, being able to embrace and kiss, as something essential in our culture, or simply have the option of choosing what I want to do. Looking at the pain face-to-face, the uncertainty of a positive response is shaping everything we care about and increasing the sense of social responsibility in the face of the constant struggle to emerge victorious from this task.

It is a source of pride to have students and teachers who demonstrate daily their dedication, their humanism, their commitment to their country, who set aside the academy to dedicate all their efforts for a better humanity.
