Brief History of the University of Pinar del Río
The University of Pinar del Río (UPR) was established on October 22, 1972, as a campus of the University of Havana located in the city of Pinar del Río. In 1976, the Ministry of Higher Education (MES) created the Network of Centers, and the university became known as the University Center of Pinar del Río (CUPR). Later, on June 21, 1994, the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers (CECM) approved the university’s name change to University of Pinar del Río “Hermanos Saíz Montes de Oca” (UPR) via Agreement No. 2765.
To improve higher education in Cuba, an integration process of universities in the territory was established by Agreement No. 7599 of the CECM on August 2, 2014. As a result of this agreement, on September 1, 2015, the University of Pinar del Río “Hermanos Saíz Montes de Oca” was formed by integrating the UPR, the University of Pedagogical Sciences “Rafael María de Mendive”, and the Faculty of Physical Culture “Nancy Uranga Romagoza”.
The university consists of three campuses: Hermanos Saíz Campus, Rafael María de Mendive Campus, and Nancy Uranga Romagoza Campus. It offers a total of 34 courses across 7 faculties, including 8 engineering degrees, 27 bachelor’s degrees, and 9 university technicians. These courses are available in three study modes: Day Course, Meeting Course, and Distance Education.
The university also has five Centers of Studies: Center of Studies in Educational Sciences, Center of Studies in Forestry, Center of Studies in Management, Local Development, Tourism and Cooperativism, Center of Studies in Environment and Natural Resources, and Center of Studies in Sports Training in High Performance.
