Founded on May 9, 1972, the University of Matanzas “Camilo Cienfuegos” is an outstanding institution that has experienced since its inception a striking and powerful educational impact, becoming recognized as one of the five best Cuban universities, according to the Ministry of Higher Education (MES).
It was originally known as Sede Universitaria Macentera, an extension of the University of Havana. On August 2, 2014, the pedagogical institute, and the faculty of physical culture were integrated into the institution and it was renamed la Universidad de Matanzas “Camilo Cienfuegos” as part of the update to Cuba’s socioeconomic model. In 2017, it was recognized as a certified institution by the Cuban Accreditation Board. In 2022, it celebrated its 50th Anniversary

You can find the Matanzas Botanical Garden in one of its university campuses, which advises scientific work related to plant biodiversity and treasured endemic species of the territory.
Since its foundation, more than 57,000 Cuban and foreign professionals call themselves alumni.
At present, it trains professionals in 46 majors in physical culture, pedagogical, business, technical, agricultural, economic, social, and humanistic sciences. The university offers full and part time in classroom study and distance education.
UMCC offers ongoing professional development to its undergraduate students through graduate programs and contributes significantly to the betterment of the province.
UMCC has maintained continuity in the professional development of undergraduate through postgraduate studies and makes a significant contribution to the improvement of human potential in the province. At the postgraduate level, UMCC offers 16 master’s degrees, 4 specialties, and develops 6 doctoral training programs in different areas of knowledge. It has played a leading role in the training system for members of national and provincial governments. .
The university’s lines of research respond to national and territorial priorities and to training process needs that are identified through exchanges with other institutions. It also stands out for its constancy in obtaining national recognition for its scientific results, since the University obtains at least one award from the Cuban Academy of Sciences per year, which represents 90% of those obtained in the province.
