XXIV AFRO-AMERICAN SOCIAL & CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY WORKSHOP

The Casa de África Museum of the Office of the Historian of Havana, the Castillo de San Severino Museum and the Quisicuaba Sociocultural Community Project, convene the Afro-American Social and Cultural Anthropology Scientific Workshop to be celebrated from January 6 to 10, 2020. The event will devote a special interest to SOUTH-SOUTH relations, seen through the cultural presence of Africa in the Caribbean and continental America, highlighting the role of feedback for both, in the past and the present.

The event will consist of workshops, courses, as well as research projects from institutions or researchers related to this subject and thematic visits to places of interest inside and outside of Havana. This workshop is open to established academics, early-career scholars, educators of all levels, professionals with a related interest.

THEMES

We welcome presentations, papers and research projects focused on any of the following topics:

RESISTANCE AND “MAROONAGE” PROCESSES – Slavery, illegal slave trade in Cuba and Africa, Cimarronaje, Uprising and, other actions of Rebellion.

CULTURE, IDENTITY, RESISTANCE AND RESILIENCE – Marginality, Ethnic periphery in the urban profile, African linguistic remnants, symbolic refluxes as globalization strategies, historical processes of transculturation, and relations of inter-ethnic affiliation that restructures the social sphere

ORALITY – Proverbs, traditional chants, legends, patakies, poetry, tongue twisters, riddles, street cries, oral narration.

ARCHAEOLOGY – Study of maroon or slaughter sites, studies of slavery in urban and industrial sites, evidence of Hispanic-African transculturation in archaeological sites.

Museum of the Slave Route “Rebelde” in Matanzas, site of the plantation and monument to the slave uprising by “Carolta” who symbolized the anti-abolitionist movements in Cuba.

VARIANTS OF POPULAR RELIGIOSITY AND CONFRATERNITIES OF AFRICAN ORIGIN – gender ,leadership, socio-community influences and all of its expressions.

AFRICA AND ITS DIASPORA – all of its expressions

THE ROLE OF THE MUSEUM WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES TO RESCUE TRADITIONS – Studies carried out with children, young people and the elderly, in museums and cultural centers, incorporation of the community in the activities of the museum, care and conservation of heritage, work with sectors of the population with physical and mental disabilities

VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY – Art exhibition, visual arts performance, short films, documentary film

REQUIREMENTS

Papers may be presented in the form of: Papers, conferences, panels, posters, video (NTSC), multimedia or with the help of other items that must be previously specified.

THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 7, 2019

The Casa de Africa Museum housed a special exhibit on the life, times and impact of Nelson Mandela to celebrate his 100th birthday.

The papers, lectures, panels, posters shall not exceed 15 pages on letter-sized paper (21.6 X 28 cm), with upper and lower margins of 1 inch (2.5 cm) and right and left margins of 1.18 inches (3.0 cm). Papers shall be written with Arial font, size 12 with spacing set to 1.5.

Those interested in submitting a proposal should accompany the registration application with a summary of their paper that does not exceed 250 words, with a similar format as the text of the work.
