Our international panel of speakers have committed to share their views on and experiences with internationalization from their unique perspective:

Dr. Bette Bergeron, State University of New York at Potsdam

Dr. Bette S. Bergeron is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the State University of New York at Potsdam. She has also served as Provost and VPAA at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut and the Dean of the School of Education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Prior to her appointment at SIUE, Dr. Bergeron led the development of educator preparation programs at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona, and served as a faculty member and program chair at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana.

Dr. Elizabeth Combier, University of North Georgia

Dr. Elizabeth Combier has a Master’s in French and a Ph.D in Spanish literature of the Golden Age. She lived in France, Mexico, and Québec, Canada. As Professor in Spanish and French at the University of North Georgia, Dr. Combier focuses on foreign language pedagogy, cultural competencies, international etiquette, and comic theater to enhance language learning. She supports shared governance in higher education. She serves as a mediator for conflict resolution and has served as an ombudsman.

Shannon Marquez

Dr. Shannon Márquez, Drexel University

Dr. Shannon Márquez is the Vice Provost for Global Health and International Development at Drexel University. She oversees the Dornsife Global Development Scholars Program, leveraging capacity-building partnerships to provide training in WASH, global health, and international development and funding for faculty/student research and student field experiences in 24 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. She developed and launched the “Community, Health, and Environment” program, an intensive field course in collaboration with the University of Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Dr. Steven Jack Marqsuee, State University of New York at Potsdam

Dr. Steven Marqusee is Dean of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Potsdam. He is a professor of Anthropology, specializing in cultural anthropology and historical archaeology in both the United States, Mexico and Central America. Dr. Marqusee has been a faculty member at SUNY Potsdam since 1976. He has led archaeology field schools to Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador and Peru. Dr. Marqusee has a PhD. In Anthropology.

Idris Robinson, Drexel University

Idris Robinson, MPH is the Assistant Director for Global Health and International Development for the Drexel University Office of International Programs, and current doctoral student in the department of Community Health and Prevention in the Dornsife School of Public Health. His research interests are in global health disparities, specifically the intersectionality of faith and health outcomes in under-resourced communities. He has led international student experiences to Senegal, the Gambia and Cuba. 

Jacquelyn Thayer Scott

Dr. Jacquelyn Thayer Scott, Cape Breton University

Jacquelyn Thayer Scott, O.C., Ph.D., LL.D. is Professor of Organizational Management & Public Administration at Cape Breton University (CBU) in Nova Scotia. She was President & Vice-Chancellor of CBU. She has served on the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Science & Technology for the Government of Canada, and in the last three years was its Deputy Chair. Dr. Scott also served as Director of the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto, operated her own PR consulting firm, and was a journalist for The Canadian Press and The Columbian Newspapers.

Carlos Terre Camacho

Dr. Orlando Terré Camacho, President AMEE-OMEDI-COMAU

Considered one of the foremost voices in the understanding of inclusive education and attention to diversity, Dr. Terré is President of the Global Association of Special Education (AMEE) and President of the Organization of education, stimulation and child development (OMEDI). He includes among his international recognition the United Nations Peace Flag and the Educational Merit Prize of the Republic of Cuba. He has given lectures and training courses throughout Latin America, the Middle East and Asia.

Jill Welch, NAFSA: Association of International Educators

Jill Welch is deputy executive director for public policy at NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the world’s largest nonprofit professional association dedicated to international education. She has advocated for nearly two decades for U.S. policies that create a more welcoming and globally engaged United States and leads NAFSA’s public policy team in advocating for lifting trade and travel restrictions on Cuba through its Educators for Cuba Campaign.
